Backups

Backups is the current Snowflake name, previously WORM snapshots (since November 2025).

WORM snapshots Backups

Discrete, immutable point-in-time copies of Snowflake objects, used for disaster recovery and for compliance retention that must survive deletion.

  • Its own documentation still describes a backup as a snapshot, because the concept kept the old word even after the commands stopped using it.
  • The rename reached the billing system before it reached most of the SQL - the metering service type flipped to BACKUP while the old commands were still the documented ones.
