Genie Ontology

Genie Ontology is a Databricks ai / bi capability, introduced June 2026.

Unified context layer that gives Genie a business-aware map of an organization, combining governed Unity Catalog semantics with context Genie infers from existing assets and usage.

  • To settle which definition of a metric wins, it borrows from PageRank - weighing where a definition came from, its author's relative authority, how often people rely on it, and how fresh it is.
  • Rather than asking anyone to model a semantic layer, it scrapes the knowledge a company already left lying around in tables, queries, dashboards and pipelines, then files it in what Databricks calls a living graph.
  • In August 2026 Databricks switched it on by default for everyone, then a week later dropped the request-access gate on its snippets too - all while it remained, officially, a Public Preview.

Limitations: Still Public Preview, though it is now on by default and no longer needs an access request. Snippets are gated by Unity Catalog permissions, so Genie One answers using only the sources the asking user is permitted to see.
