Agent mode

Agent mode is the current Databricks name, previously Research Agent (since February 2026).

The mode inside a Genie Agent that answers complex, exploratory questions with multi-step reasoning and hypothesis testing, as opposed to the one-question-one-answer Chat mode.

• You do not get a chat reply, you get a written report: citations, visualizations and supporting tables included. 🔗
• It is the mode that reads the files: attach unstructured documents sitting in a Unity Catalog volume and it will answer questions about those too, not just about tables. 🔗
• Impatience is a documented feature - if the reasoning is dragging on, click Answer now and it stops thinking and answers from whatever context it has gathered so far. 🔗

⚠ Limitations: Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan workspaces can use it as is; every other region can only use it if cross-Geo processing is enabled. 🔗
