Genie Code CLI

Genie Code CLI is a Databricks ai / ml capability, introduced October 2026.

A coding agent that runs locally in your terminal, tuned for data and AI work on Databricks - it edits local files, runs commands, and uses the Databricks CLI to discover data and build and deploy pipelines, models, and apps.

• You cannot pick its brain: Databricks chooses the model, and during Beta that model is GPT 5.6, which may not match what the other Genie surfaces use. 🔗
• It shares a first name with Genie but not a bill - usage is charged like calling the model directly through Unity Gateway, and Genie budgets do not touch it. 🔗
• It is a separate experience from Genie Code in the workspace, with its own tools, skills, and instructions that it does not share with its workspace namesake. 🔗

⚠ Limitations: Model selection is managed by Databricks and you cannot choose a specific model; it is not billed under Genie usage or covered by Genie budgets, so spend is controlled with Unity Gateway budgets. It needs a workspace in a Unity Gateway supported region with Unity Catalog enabled, plus the Databricks CLI 1.0.0 or above installed separately, and it does not yet include all of the workspace Genie Code capabilities. 🔗
