Databricks-hosted RStudio Server
Databricks-hosted RStudio Server is deprecated, replaced by Posit Workbench (deprecated August 2027).
RStudio Server running on the Databricks driver node, launched straight from the workspace so R users got a full IDE against cluster data without leaving the platform.
- It was killed by a version number rather than an announcement. The feature simply does not exist on Databricks Runtime 16.0 and above, so upgrading a cluster was how most people found out.
- Declared end-of-life in 2024, it is still running somewhere - the 15.4 long-term-support runtime keeps it alive until 19 August 2027, nearly three years after the obituary.
- Its replacement is not a Databricks product at all but Posit Workbench, built by the company that makes RStudio in the first place.
