Generation 2 standard warehouses is a Snowflake compute / bi capability, introduced May 2025.

An updated standard virtual warehouse on faster hardware with software optimizations for delete, update, merge and table scans, aimed at analytics and data engineering workloads.

• Snowflake declines to publish a speedup number and tells you to benchmark it yourself, promising only that most queries finish faster. 🔗
• Calling it "generation 2" retroactively made every warehouse anyone had ever run a generation 1 warehouse. 🔗
