Databricks Light
Databricks Light is retired (retired July 2022).
Databricks' packaging of the plain open source Apache Spark runtime, offered as a cheaper runtime option for jobs that did not need Databricks Runtime's performance, reliability or autoscaling.
- It went by two names at once from the day it launched, being introduced as Databricks Light and also known as Data Engineering Light.
- You could not use it interactively - it was selectable only when creating a cluster for a JAR, Python or spark-submit job, never for notebook work.
- Its final chapter was an Extended Support edition whose entire reason for existing was swapping a deprecated Ubuntu 16.04 for 18.04, and that ran out in July 2022.
